TL;DR

Ship raw cards that sell for $20 or less in eBay standard envelope. It costs about the same as a stamp and adds limited tracking and up to $20 of shipping protection. Ship cards over $20, and every graded card, in a bubble mailer or small box with USPS Ground Advantage, which includes tracking and $100 of insurance. Add signature confirmation when the order total is $750 or more. Keep a PWE, a plain white envelope with a stamp and no tracking, for trades and buyers you know.

How you ship sports cards on eBay decides whether a cheap sale makes money. Ship an $8 card in a bubble mailer and the label can cost more than you made on the card. Ship a $40 card in a plain white envelope with a stamp and you have no tracking to show if the buyer says it never arrived.

This guide shows how to ship sports cards four ways, with the 2026 rules and prices for each, how to pack them, and a rule for picking the method on each sale.

Quick answer

  • Ship a raw card that sells for $20 or less in eBay standard envelope. It costs under a dollar for 1 oz and includes limited tracking and up to $20 of shipping protection.
  • Ship a raw card over $20 in a bubble mailer with USPS Ground Advantage. Its tracking is what protects you if the buyer says the card never arrived.
  • Ship every graded card in a bubble mailer or small box with tracking. eBay doesn't allow graded cards in standard envelope.
  • When the order total is $750 or more, add signature confirmation. eBay requires it for you to keep its seller protection.
  • Use a plain white envelope, or PWE, with a stamp only for trades and sales to people you know. It has no tracking.

USPS prices come from the current USPS Notice 123, effective October 4, 2026, which includes the temporary holiday prices. USPS says those prices stay in place until January 17, 2027. Letter prices are unchanged since the July 12 price change. Standard envelope rates come from eBay's Help page and Seller Center page. The Help rates match the USPS stamped letter prices, and the Seller Center rates match the USPS metered letter prices.

eBay standard envelope rules

eBay standard envelope is a low-cost shipping label with limited tracking that you buy through eBay Labels. It is the cheapest tracked way to ship a single card on eBay, and it has strict limits. If an envelope breaks them, eBay's Help page says "the shipment may be returned to you, or the buyer may receive the item with postage due."

What can go in it

  • Items in eligible categories, including trading cards, with a selling price of $20 or less, not including tax.
  • No more than 24 raw cards per envelope.
  • No more than two cards in top loaders.
  • No graded cards.

All three card limits apply at once, along with the size, weight, and thickness limits below.

What the packed envelope has to be

  • At least 3.5 x 5 inches and no larger than 6.125 x 11.5 inches, with a length 1.3 to 2.5 times its height. eBay says a plain #10 envelope "works just fine."
  • 3 oz or less, counting the envelope.
  • Under 1/4 inch thick at every point, flexible, and "not too rigid."
  • Free of plastic, strings, and clasps, with the address parallel to the longest side.

eBay's standard envelope terms also exclude bubble mailers and cardboard packages.

Tracking and protection

You and the buyer can track the envelope in My eBay or Seller Hub. It doesn't need an acceptance scan, so you can drop it in a mailbox.

Shipping protection covers up to $20 on a single-item order and up to $50 on a combined order. Three $12 cards in one envelope, $36 in all, are covered. A single $35 card can't use standard envelope at all.

If a buyer says a standard envelope never arrived or arrived damaged, eBay's Seller Center page recommends filing a shipping protection plan claim. Its Help page suggests working with the buyer to resolve the issue first. For a lost envelope, the Help page says to wait 30 days before filing a claim, longer than the 15 days in eBay's 2023 terms. Claims must be filed within 90 days of creating the label.

How to use it

Select eBay standard envelope in the shipping section when you create the listing, then print the label from eBay Labels. If you list often, save an eBay shipping policy that uses it and apply that policy to your cheap cards.

PWE vs standard envelope

A PWE with a Forever stamp costs $0.82 for 1 oz. eBay standard envelope costs $0.78 or $0.82 for the same weight, depending on which eBay page you read. The difference is what happens when a buyer says the card never arrived.

eBay's Money Back Guarantee policy asks the seller for a tracking number uploaded to eBay that shows the item was delivered. A PWE has no tracking, so you have nothing to show, and eBay may require you to reimburse it for the buyer's refund. Standard envelope gives you limited tracking and up to $20 of shipping protection. eBay's card shipping tips page says that if you ship with stamps on a plain white envelope, "you'll be sending it out blind." For eBay sales of cards that sell for $20 or less, use standard envelope.

Two USPS rules can raise the price of a PWE:

  1. A top loader can make the letter nonmachinable. USPS treats a letter that is too rigid or unevenly thick as nonmachinable, and nonmachinable letters pay a $0.49 surcharge. A 1 oz letter with that surcharge costs $1.31.
  2. Each added ounce costs $0.29, so a 2 oz letter is $1.11.

A PWE still works for trades and off-eBay sales where you and the buyer both accept no tracking.

Bubble mailer with tracking

Once a card sells for more than $20, or it is graded, you are shipping a package. The usual choice is a bubble mailer with tracking, or BMWT, sent with USPS Ground Advantage. The USPS Ground Advantage page says tracking is included and "$100 insurance is included."

Until January 17, 2027, USPS holiday prices for a 4 oz or 8 oz Ground Advantage package are $8.40 to $10.20 at a Post Office counter and $7.33 to $8.95 at commercial prices, depending on distance. Before the holiday change on October 4, the same packages cost $7.90 to $9.45 at the counter and $6.93 to $8.40 at commercial prices. USPS offers commercial prices on labels bought online through Click-N-Ship, and eBay Labels shows its own price before you pay.

Before you list a card that will ship in a bubble mailer, check that its price covers the fees, the label, supplies, and what you paid for the card.

How to pack each method

eBay's card shipping tips page is written for non-sports cards and has short packing tips. It says to put a raw card in a penny sleeve and then a card saver, top loader, or cardboard sandwich, and to seal top loaders with painter's tape. It says to put graded cards in a cardboard sandwich. That page is older. It still names First Class Package service, which USPS replaced with Ground Advantage, and it counts 15 raw cards per standard envelope where eBay's Help page now allows 24. eBay's general packing advice adds that a container should be slightly larger than the item, so you can cushion it "with packing material on all sides." The steps below combine those tips with the standard envelope limits.

Standard envelope or PWE

  1. Put the card in a penny sleeve.
  2. Put the sleeved card in a top loader or card saver, and seal the opening with painter's tape or a team bag so the card can't slide out. In standard envelope, no more than two cards can be in top loaders.
  3. Skip cardboard stiffeners and bubble mailers. eBay's Help page says the envelope must be "not too rigid," and its terms exclude bubble mailers and cardboard packages. Keep it under 1/4 inch thick at every point.
  4. Use a plain paper envelope between 3.5 x 5 inches and 6.125 x 11.5 inches, with a length 1.3 to 2.5 times its height. A #10 envelope works.
  5. Weigh the sealed envelope. Over 1 oz, buy the 2 oz or 3 oz label. Over 3 oz, it can't go standard envelope.

Bubble mailer, for a raw card over $20 or a single slab

  1. Sleeve and top-load a raw card and seal the opening with a team bag or tape. Put a slab in a protective sleeve, then cushion it on all sides with bubble wrap or other packing material.
  2. Tape the holder between two pieces of cardboard, a cardboard sandwich, so it can't bend.
  3. Use a mailer slightly larger than the card, so the card can't slide around inside.
  4. Photograph the card, the packing before you seal it, and the sealed package. If a buyer says it arrived damaged, the photos show how you packed it.

Box, for several slabs or a large lot

  1. Use a small box for two or more slabs or a large lot. eBay's card shipping tips page suggests a small box filled with tissue paper or bubble wrap for two graded cards. Shake the box before you seal it, and add fill if anything moves.
  2. When the order total is $750 or more, including shipping and tax, buy signature confirmation. eBay's signature confirmation policy requires it for you to stay protected. Notice 123 lists it at $4.15 when you add it electronically and $5.15 at the counter.
  3. Ground Advantage includes $100 of insurance. Buy more when the order is worth more.

The profit math on an $8 card

Here is the same $8 raw card sold with free shipping, shipped two ways. eBay fees are the 13.25% final value fee plus the $0.30 per-order fee for orders of $10 or less, from eBay's selling fees page and the seller fee cheat sheet. The bubble mailer label is the lowest commercial price in USPS's holiday table for a 4 oz package, and the supply costs are example figures, not quotes. The example assumes no eBay Store and no promoted listing.

Standard envelopeBubble mailer
Sale price$8.00$8.00
eBay fees, 13.25% plus $0.30-$1.36-$1.36
Postage-$0.82-$7.33
Example supplies-$0.25-$0.60
Left before card cost$5.57-$1.29

If you paid $3 for the card, standard envelope leaves you $2.57 of profit. The bubble mailer turns the same sale into a $4.29 loss.

This leaves out sales tax. eBay also charges its 13.25% on the tax the buyer pays, which adds about 8 cents at an 8% tax rate.

Two things follow from the table:

  • On a card this cheap, the shipping method decides whether you make money. In this example, standard envelope leaves a profit as long as the card cost less than $5.57.
  • If you charge the buyer for shipping, eBay takes 13.25% of that too. A $1.25 shipping charge leaves you about $1.08 toward postage.

Run your own numbers, including shipping and supplies, in the free eBay profit calculator or the profit calculator guide.

A decision rule for every sale

  1. Does the order show the Authenticity Guarantee badge? Ship it to the authenticator address in the order details, not to the buyer, as the first-sale checklist explains. Then pick the packing below.
  2. Is the card graded? Ship it in a bubble mailer or box with tracking.
  3. Is it raw and selling for $20 or less? Use eBay standard envelope, as long as the packed envelope meets the limits.
  4. Is it raw and over $20? Ship it in a bubble mailer with tracking.
  5. Is the order total $750 or more, including shipping and tax? Add signature confirmation.
  6. Is it a trade or an off-eBay sale with someone you trust? A PWE works if you both accept no tracking.

Save two eBay shipping policies, one using standard envelope and one using Ground Advantage, and choose the right one when you list. If you bulk list with a Seller Hub template, enter the policy name in its shipping policy column, as the CSV listing guide explains.

Common shipping mistakes

  • Using standard envelope for a card over $20. It isn't eligible.
  • Putting three or more top-loaded cards in one standard envelope. The limit is two.
  • Shipping a standard envelope in a bubble mailer or cardboard mailer. eBay's terms exclude both, and a lumpy or stiff envelope can be returned or charged as a package.
  • Paying counter prices. The USPS commercial price for a 4 oz Ground Advantage package is about $1 less than retail.
  • Leaving shipping out of your profit. Postage, envelopes, sleeves, and top loaders are all costs, and you need records of them at tax time, as the sports card taxes guide explains.

Where CardZen fits

CardZen doesn't buy or print shipping labels. You still buy them in eBay Labels. It helps when you list and after the sale.

  • When you list. With Shipping by asking price, in Settings > eBay > Policies, you set up to ten price limits, each with its own eBay shipping policy. CardZen picks the policy for each card from its asking price. Graded cards, lots, and cards priced at $20 or more skip standard envelope and use your fallback policy. That cutoff is stricter than eBay's, so a card priced at exactly $20 uses the fallback unless you pick a standard envelope policy on the card itself. You still have to pack each envelope within eBay's limits.
  • After the sale. The Sales page syncs your eBay sales with eBay's fees and, when you bought the label on eBay, the label cost. Net profit is the sale price plus any shipping the buyer paid, minus eBay fees, the label, and what you paid for the card. Sales tax is left out. Net shows once the fees and the card's cost are recorded. If you bought postage outside eBay, Net doesn't include it. Until the order ships or eBay bills the label, Net leaves the label out and shows in gray with a "~" in front. On a computer, sort the Sales page by Net to find the sales that lost money. Final losses show in red.
  • For supplies. Log envelopes, sleeves, and top loaders as business expenses. The Cash flow report subtracts them to show your profit after business expenses. They don't change the net on each sale.

Start free with CardZen. The free trial is 15 CardSense scans or 14 days, whichever comes first, with no credit card required.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to ship a sports card on eBay?
eBay standard envelope. In October 2026, eBay's Help page listed $0.82 for 1 oz and its Seller Center listed $0.78. It is only for raw cards that sell for $20 or less, and it includes limited tracking.
Can I ship graded cards in eBay standard envelope?
No. eBay excludes graded cards. Ship slabs in a bubble mailer or small box with tracking.
How many cards fit in an eBay standard envelope?
No more than 24 raw cards, and no more than two cards in top loaders. The packed envelope must weigh 3 oz or less, bend, and stay under 1/4 inch thick.
Is PWE shipping safe for eBay sales?
A PWE, a plain white envelope with a stamp, has no tracking, so you can't show the card was delivered if a buyer says it never arrived. For cards that sell for $20 or less, eBay standard envelope costs about the same and adds limited tracking and up to $20 of shipping protection.
What does PWE cost in 2026?
A Forever stamp covers a 1 oz letter, which costs $0.82. Each added ounce is $0.29. A rigid or lumpy envelope, such as one with a top loader, can add a $0.49 nonmachinable surcharge.
Do I need signature confirmation for expensive cards?
On eBay, yes, when the order total is $750 or more, including shipping and tax. eBay requires signature confirmation on those orders for you to keep its seller protection.
